How we hire

We aim to find the right person for every role through a careful and deliberate process. The criteria differ between management roles, key expert positions and operational jobs; where a vacancy is open, its criteria are set out in the announcement itself.

The process is designed to establish that we are the right fit for you and for the career you want — that you understand who we are, what we do and what we would expect of you, before you decide to join us.

To give every candidate an equal opportunity, we adapt the process — from application through to interview — to your needs, so that you can show us your best. The stages below are what a typical process looks like; the detail varies with the role.

  1. Step 01

    Find your vacancy

We announce openings on our LinkedIn page, through the recruitment portals we work with, and with the employment office. The quickest route is the direct one: write to us, whether or not a role is advertised.

  2. Step 02

    Submit your application

A CV and a short covering note by email. No account to create, no form to complete. Tell us which side of the business interests you — trading, operations or logistics — and why steel.

  3. Step 03

    We review your application

Your application is read by the person who would manage the role, not filtered by software. We reply to everyone, including the candidates we decline.

  4. Step 04

    Talk to a recruiter

A first conversation of about thirty minutes, by telephone or video. Experience, what you are looking for, notice period and expectations — so neither side spends time on a mismatch.

  5. Step 05

    Meet the hiring manager

A longer conversation about the desk itself: the material, the counterparties, the documentation, and the hours the work actually takes. Ask us everything you need to ask.

  6. Step 06

    Understand your future workplace

Come to the London office, meet the people you would sit with, and watch an enquiry move from specification to quotation. A working morning, not a tour.

  7. Step 07

    Assessment

A real enquiry, anonymised: read the specification, weigh two mill options and set out what you would quote and why. For operational roles the exercise is documentary rather than commercial.

  8. Step 08

    Job offer

References, then a written offer covering role, salary and start date. Start dates are agreed, not imposed. Whatever the outcome, you hear from us.

Do you want to work with us?

Send a CV and a paragraph on the work you want to be doing. If your background is in steel, name the standards and the markets you have worked with. If it is not, tell us what you have done that demands the same precision.
